Testing

Testing Capability

When Approved Document E was implemented for new building work in July 2004 many Construction firms opted for the system of Robust Detail (RD) because of the "fear factor". The RDs are based on mass using the traditional heavy and bulky building materials. They give a large margin for error and because of this fact do not require pre completion testing (PCT). They are also high total cost when taking account of materials, labour, transport and handling costs, take up more of the footprint and require stronger and therefore more costly structures to support them.

It is not the cost of PCT that will push architects and surveyors towards the RD solution but rather the fear of failure, the "fear factor". Quite rightly architects and specifiers are not prepared to risk failures not due to the build detail but to the vagaries of on site workmanship and the variability of results due to local conditions, because it will cost a small fortune to put right.

Unfortunately this approach discourages the adoption of innovative solutions based on lightweight, low volume and technically superior products such as those in the Xetal range. Such solutions allow greater letting area in Hotels and commercial buildings, and smaller footprint to achieve the same available area in the housing sector, which is being encouraged to build at higher density by current Government policy.

Xetal can remove the fear factor and allow architects and specifiers to adopt more cost effective and innovative building practices. How? By providing a testing service, which not only allows you to pre-test prior to PCT but also where there is a failure can identify the exact location of the failure within the wall or floor. By using this service the builder can submit for PCT confident in the knowledge that he will pass.

The equipment used for testing is calibrated in a UKAS-accredited laboratory and is guaranteed to predict the figures that will be obtained in a PCT.

Xetal have been operating their own site test house for over a year.In addition to generating site test data on their new products and solutions the facilities allow Xetal to offer third party development.

Recent projects include the development and testing of an acoustic door, sound reduction in aircraft seating, and design and testing of an acoustic housing for mobile generators. In addition building elements, such as a proposed facade design, can be tested for acoustic performance prior to specification and construction.
